Ah, you can’t beat a poppy. Up there with roses for one of my favourites.

Rain has arrived . Summer come and gone yet again but it is a huge relief not to be so hot.

  21. Oh, I love poppies and that is a gorgeous color. The ones that seem to do well here in a perennial garden are the real big orange-red ones. Are they started with plantings or bulbs in the fall?

    • Eliza Waters says:

Oriental poppies (Papaver orientale) are the ones you are thinking of and they are perennial plants that go dormant shortly after they bloom. They come in red, orange, pink, and salmon cultivars. It is best to buy them as 1 or 2 year plants as they don’t like to be moved when older.
The one you see here is a self-sowing annual (Papaver somniferum) They bloom, set seed, then die and the seeds can be spread (like a salt shaker!) where you want them to grow next year. I have red, mauve and dark purple. Would you like me to send you some seed, I always have tons that I just throw away. (Email me, see my About page.)

Beautiful! I planted two purple poppies this year! Hoping they are going to be as beautiful as yours!
