Wholly understandable Eliza
Beautiful Eliza. What’s the name? I saw the red in Greece and was impressed by its delicacy and simple beauty.
Thanks, Dawn. Papaver somniferum ‘Lauren’s Grape’
Awesome. Thanks Eliza. I can now post my pic of the red one !
What a beautiful colour, I have never seen a poppy that colour… lovely!
Thank you, it is the result of a grower’s natural selection over many generations called ‘Lauren’s Grape.’ I am thrilled with it.

Ah, you can’t beat a poppy. Up there with roses for one of my favourites.
Rain has arrived . Summer come and gone yet again but it is a huge relief not to be so hot.

Thank you, MJ.
Summer isn’t always what we dream about in the middle of winter. 😉

Gracias, Maria!
Oh, I love poppies and that is a gorgeous color. The ones that seem to do well here in a perennial garden are the real big orange-red ones. Are they started with plantings or bulbs in the fall?
Oriental poppies (Papaver orientale) are the ones you are thinking of and they are perennial plants that go dormant shortly after they bloom. They come in red, orange, pink, and salmon cultivars. It is best to buy them as 1 or 2 year plants as they don’t like to be moved when older.
The one you see here is a self-sowing annual (Papaver somniferum) They bloom, set seed, then die and the seeds can be spread (like a salt shaker!) where you want them to grow next year. I have red, mauve and dark purple. Would you like me to send you some seed, I always have tons that I just throw away. (Email me, see my About page.)
I have tried some poppies with no success so I hate to take your seeds! The ones I see here are the really tall deep orange ones.
Beautiful! I planted two purple poppies this year! Hoping they are going to be as beautiful as yours!
Thank you, Nancy. I’m sure yours will be grand!
