Thank you! It seems to like drier soil, maybe you’re too wet? A patch close to the gravel driveway might work. I have plenty of divisions!
I have planted them in drier areas with no luck. So, thanks, but I avoid plants that can hurt me anyway! 😉

Thank you, Susie. A. chinensis var. tarquettii is the only astilbe that can take full sun. You are right, most of the other species are shade lovers.

Thanks, Judy. No I don’t dig them, they have proved hardy here. My only problem is voles love them, so I lose some every year. I don’t deadhead them, so they self-sow readily and replace the ones lost.
Good info, and I appreciate it. I dug them up last year but they didn’t do well this year, so I think I’ll make a clump and wish it well this year.

I’ve been trying to grow globe thistle from seed for the last two years. Eventually I have about 5 small plants. They are not easy to grow seed, do you find Eliza?
I have never tried to grow them by seed, but even divisions can be tricky to establish. They can be fussy, but once they’ve found a good moist to dry spot, they are happy. Good luck with your 5. (You might wait until Sept. to put them in the ground.)

Having swarths of color like you and the same weather I know how hard it is to maintain them. Before surgery was planned, I dumped truck load after truckload of free wood chips all along my gardens and then pitchforked them into place I fear having not done that my 3 years would have been for not with so little rain. Gardening is not for the faint of heart lol Enjoy your Sunday we did get just shy of an inch last night hope you catch a downpour.
