Silent Sunday – Deep Cold

The deep cold continues… it is January after all. Saturday morning at dawn the temperature outside was –7ºF (–21ºC). Not much flowing water can be seen at the waterfall, but the icicles are great!

  1. About the same temperature here. Those icicles are impressive!

  2. sandyjwhite says:

BRRR! The icicles are beautiful though!

  3. The clump of icicles on the left looks like a hand. Winter’s grip…

  4. Karen Lang says:

    Amazing and beautiful ☃️

  5. Remind’s me of Shakespeare’s poem “When Icicles Hang by the Wall”. Stunning representation of reality.

  6. Anne says:

–21ºC sounds awfully cold to me! The last photograph is particularly impressive.

  7. John says:

    Amazing, beautiful!

  8. Sheree says:

    Fantastic photos

  9. I seem to feel the cold coming from my screen… I haven’t seen such wonderful icicles since I was a child…

  10. These are great! We’ve not seen icicles here in a long time.

    • Eliza Waters says:

Thank you, Allison. It doesn’t seem like winter unless we get a few of these deep freezes. Still, it is hard on the wildlife. Glad they don’t last long!

  11. Alice says:

Stalagticicles and stalagmicicles…like being in an icicle cave. The many shapes of water. So intriguing.

  12. Treah Pichette says:

Ice caves…….such a planet we live on!

  13. neihtn2012 says:

–7ºF! It has not been as cold yet in New Jersey, although it has been below freezing for the past week. Your three images are awesome!

  14. derrycats says:

Brrrrrr!! It was a balmy 6 degrees in PA yesterday morning. Ugh.

  15. =7 and ‘deep cold’ certainly pair up well. Happy Sunday, and may you get some warmer temps. We were in a southern deep freeze over the weekend that included ice on the roadways.

    • Eliza Waters says:

Thank you, Judy. I am grateful for our road crews up here. I’d be terrified to go out down there… assuming they just wait for the temps to rise rather than bother with expensive equipment. A bit of a holiday waiting for it to melt. 😉

  16. pbmgarden says:

You captured the essence of ice itself. Beautiful. Stay warm and safe. (We are at 18F this Sun morning in central NC.)

  17. Very cool and beautiful, Eliza! BRRRRRRR……it’s cold up your way! Stay warm!!

  18. Dee Min says:

Spectacular!!!!! That you’d venture out long enough to take these shots is brrrr-ave!!!!! 😊😊😊☀️☀️☀️😊😊😊

  19. gwenniesgardenworld says:

    It’s like a fairy world, a cold one 😀

  20. shoreacres says:

Icicles like this always remind me of stalactites and stalagmites — and how much fun it was to munch on icicles like popsicles when I was a kid.

    • Eliza Waters says:

When I think of huge icicles, I think about the swords of them that formed off the slate roof of our school. It’s a wonder no one was ever killed by those 3′ daggers when the snow slid off, crashing below. The playground teacher would always be yelling at us to stay clear of the roof, good thing!

  21. I love mini ice caves like this! One of the wonderful discoveries in our cold north!

  22. Time to get the ice skates out. I guess I can’t complain about our 28f degrees.

    • Eliza Waters says:

You’re right about good skating ice, but I wouldn’t dare skate these days… if I fell, and I know I would as lake ice isn’t exactly smooth, I’d probably break something, lol.
28 for you is still a killing frost, so has impact on your garden. Hopefully, the deep cold of last year won’t repeat itself, fingers crossed.

  23. utahan15 says:

    ice frozen
    everywhere
    watch where you walk
the beauty of the mid of winter
    tho eh?

  24. Jet Eliot says:

I gasped when I read the temperature and I gasped when I saw the icicles. lol. Man oh man it is soooo cold there, Eliza. I am amazed that you are outside taking photos, and very grateful too, because those icicles are incredible. Cheers to you and stay warm!

  25. Val Boyko says:

    Hauntingly beautiful❄️❣️❄️

  26. Dale says:

Since we have to live with these cold temperatures, might as well go out and search for the beauty caused by said cold. And you’ve done so beautifully!

  27. Kris P says:

Very pretty – and I expect you must have much warmer clothes on hand than I do 😉

  28. Debbie says:

Very pretty, Eliza! It’s been FRIGID here, too. Somehow, I don’t remember this much freezing from when I was a kid. Snow, yes, but not ice. Oh, well.

  29. Winter’s beauty! These almost look like ice caves.

  30. Tranature - quiet moments in nature says:

Fabulous icicles Eliza, your winter wonderland is so beautiful! 💛

  31. Icicles like fingers! They’re quite amazing.

  32. Robin says:

Wow! They ARE great. Brave of you to go out and get some photos in that kind of cold. 🙂

  33. cindy knoke says:

    Wow! How intense and beautiful.

  34. Murtagh's Meadow says:

Brrrrr that is very cold. Stay warm Eliza

  35. Tina says:

    Beautiful photos, Eliza! Brrrrr!

  36. arlingwoman says:

Wow, that’s cold! I had a walk down to the river today and it was frozen over–just 1/4 inch or so–thin, but all the way across. That’s unusual. But we have had overnight temps in the teens and twenties (it was about 35 today), so it makes sense. Beautiful ice photos.

  37. I’m feeling cold just looking at all the beautiful ice!! Hope you’re staying warm on your treks to the waterfall and love how that last photo looks like an ice cave.

  38. The photos are gorgeous and provide much food for the imagination: the icicles in first one look like a gemstone or a geode, in the second one, I see a sculpture of a person on the left side entering a dark cave… which is depicted in the third image. I wonder if he’s looking for the gemstone in the first image? You created a story in your photos of the icicles: simply lovely!

  39. Karen says:

Lovely shots Eliza, I can’t imagine what -21c would feel like, nor do I think I would want to find out. Stay safe, warm and cosy.

  40. nshami14 says:

Phenomenal shots Eliza. Everything is frozen or frosty. We had snow a few weeks ago, but I’m really glad there are no icicles outside right now.

  41. We’ve not cropped below zero yet, according to the thermometer in my car, but did achieve that one day last week. Our current temperatures seem balmy by comparison. One of my friends in Northern VT has posted his thermometer a few times on FB and the lows ranged between 20-30 degrees below. That makes my 5 degrees seem like shorts and flip flops weather. 🙂
You are lucky to have so many opportunities to see figured ice on your brook as your nice images display. I bet Chapel Falls looks impressive.

    • Eliza Waters says:

I bet Chapel is awesome, but I probably won’t be venturing out that way. I went last year and the paths were pretty icy.
The temp today was pretty nice, I was able to get a good walk in the sun. Glad for the lengthening days!

      • Not that I am encouraging you to endanger yourself but microspikes are great aids. That said, someone who was wearing them still slipped on the ice near a waterfall and was pulled under the ice and drowned. Nothing is foolproof and one should always use caution is such situations.

      • Eliza Waters says:

Goodness! Was this at Chapel? Precisely why I am nervous about going close to waterways when conditions are icy.

      • It was at Purgatory Falls in NH. The hiker was Dorie Goodman, an organic baker whom I had just met two weeks earlier at the winter farmer’s market in Amherst. I do go to waterfalls in winter but am very aware that anything can happen so use caution with every step.

I did something risky at Chapel a number of years ago. Although I had a friend with me he was on the upper side of the road above the waterfall. I was below and went out on the ice to get a shot. The water is not deep there but the current is strong and after I got back on the ground I realized what would have happened had the ice let go under me. Lesson learned and thankfully not the hard way. Stay safe and if at all in doubt don’t do it. 🙂

      • Eliza Waters says:

        Always, safety first.

  42. Glacial! I’m chilled to the bone. 🙂 Beautiful pictures — I hope your fingers didn’t get frozen!

  43. maryjane678 says:

Amazing photos Eliza. Bet you’re looking forward to Spring though! MJ

    • Eliza Waters says:

Thank you, MJ. Indeed I am, but winter, as cold as it is, is quite beautiful here. Today was sunny and the sun glittered off the snow in such a lovely way. 🙂

  44. Jane Lurie says:

Brrr, is right, Eliza. I’ve been thinking of my NE friends in this deep freeze. On the bright side, a great opportunity for cool ice photos! ❄️❄️❄️

  45. Cathy says:

Hope you are staying warm Eliza! We have only had temperatures like that a couple of times since I have lived in Germany (28 winters now) and I feel for you! Lovely photos. 😃

    • Eliza Waters says:

Thank you, Cathy. Today and yesterday we broke freezing by a few degrees, but tonight it is back to super cold temps again. Time to load more wood in the stove!
