The deep cold continues… it is January after all. Saturday morning at dawn the temperature outside was –7ºF (–21ºC). Not much flowing water can be seen at the waterfall, but the icicles are great!

About the same temperature here. Those icicles are impressive!
Thank you, Laurie! Isn’t it funny how we feel that temps in the 20s today feels warm? 😉
We do! Although today when I was out taking pictures at the lake, my fingers were freezing.
BRRR! The icicles are beautiful though!
Thank you, Sandy!
The clump of icicles on the left looks like a hand. Winter’s grip…
Yes, winter definitely has us in its icy grip. 🙂
Amazing and beautiful ☃️
Thank you, Karen. ❤
Remind’s me of Shakespeare’s poem “When Icicles Hang by the Wall”. Stunning representation of reality.
I’d forgotten that song from “Love’s Labours Lost.” Thanks for the reminder!
Most welcome!
Thank you!
Most welcome, dear 🌺
Brrrr!
Indeed! 🙂
–21ºC sounds awfully cold to me! The last photograph is particularly impressive.
Thank you, Anne. We generally get a few of these super cold days in January. I’m glad they don’t last all winter!
Amazing, beautiful!
Thank you, John!
Fantastic photos
Thank you, Sheree. 🙂
You’re very welcome Eliza
A good trio
Thank you, Derrick.
I seem to feel the cold coming from my screen… I haven’t seen such wonderful icicles since I was a child…
Thank you very much, Anita, and for reblogging! 🙂
💕
Reblogged this on anitadawesauthor.com.
These are great! We’ve not seen icicles here in a long time.
Thank you, Allison. It doesn’t seem like winter unless we get a few of these deep freezes. Still, it is hard on the wildlife. Glad they don’t last long!
Stalagticicles and stalagmicicles…like being in an icicle cave. The many shapes of water. So intriguing.
Thank you, Alice… it certainly is!
Ice caves…….such a planet we live on!
Indeed, pretty ‘cool’ 😉 … The stream and river are pretty much covered solid, but you can still hear it flowing, gurgling beneath.
–7ºF! It has not been as cold yet in New Jersey, although it has been below freezing for the past week. Your three images are awesome!
Thank you, Hien!
Brrrrrr!! It was a balmy 6 degrees in PA yesterday morning. Ugh.
Yes, January is here! Stay warm. 🙂
=7 and ‘deep cold’ certainly pair up well. Happy Sunday, and may you get some warmer temps. We were in a southern deep freeze over the weekend that included ice on the roadways.
Thank you, Judy. I am grateful for our road crews up here. I’d be terrified to go out down there… assuming they just wait for the temps to rise rather than bother with expensive equipment. A bit of a holiday waiting for it to melt. 😉
Wow! Beautiful!!
Thank you, Carrie! 🙂
You captured the essence of ice itself. Beautiful. Stay warm and safe. (We are at 18F this Sun morning in central NC.)
Thank you, Susie. This cold has half the nation in its grip. Stay warm!
Very cool and beautiful, Eliza! BRRRRRRR……it’s cold up your way! Stay warm!!
Thank you, Donna, I will!
Spectacular!!!!! That you’d venture out long enough to take these shots is brrrr-ave!!!!! 😊😊😊☀️☀️☀️😊😊😊
🙂 Thanks, Dee. Fresh air and exercise is a must (worth the bundling up)!
Indeedy!!!!!
It’s like a fairy world, a cold one 😀
VERY cold one! 🙂
Icicles like this always remind me of stalactites and stalagmites — and how much fun it was to munch on icicles like popsicles when I was a kid.
When I think of huge icicles, I think about the swords of them that formed off the slate roof of our school. It’s a wonder no one was ever killed by those 3′ daggers when the snow slid off, crashing below. The playground teacher would always be yelling at us to stay clear of the roof, good thing!
I love mini ice caves like this! One of the wonderful discoveries in our cold north!
Yes, we have to find the good in this frigid weather!
Time to get the ice skates out. I guess I can’t complain about our 28f degrees.
You’re right about good skating ice, but I wouldn’t dare skate these days… if I fell, and I know I would as lake ice isn’t exactly smooth, I’d probably break something, lol.
28 for you is still a killing frost, so has impact on your garden. Hopefully, the deep cold of last year won’t repeat itself, fingers crossed.
ice frozen
everywhere
watch where you walk
the beauty of the mid of winter
tho eh?
Yes to all. 🙂
we all shine on Eliza. like the earth, the sun and the moon. what a powerful song from john~
I gasped when I read the temperature and I gasped when I saw the icicles. lol. Man oh man it is soooo cold there, Eliza. I am amazed that you are outside taking photos, and very grateful too, because those icicles are incredible. Cheers to you and stay warm!
Thank you, Jet. Warm clothes (layers, down coat, insulated boots) make all the difference, but walks are pretty short!
Hauntingly beautiful❄️❣️❄️
Thank you, Val! 🙂
Since we have to live with these cold temperatures, might as well go out and search for the beauty caused by said cold. And you’ve done so beautifully!
Indeed, thank you, Dale. Since we build up to this through the autumn and early winter, it doesn’t seem so extreme. Good clothing is a must!
Exactly! And if the humidity is low, even better. I was just out there barehanded…till the wind picked up and changed things 😉
Yeah, that happens a lot this time of year! 😉
That’s for sure.
Very pretty – and I expect you must have much warmer clothes on hand than I do 😉
Thank you, Kris. I have four different coats that I wear depending on the temperature. These temps require two down layers– vest and coat! 🙂
Very pretty, Eliza! It’s been FRIGID here, too. Somehow, I don’t remember this much freezing from when I was a kid. Snow, yes, but not ice. Oh, well.
Thank you, Debbie! This winter started out mild, but lately, it has felt ‘normal.’ I like winter to be winter!
I like four distinct seasons, but lately, it seems that winter and summer are overstaying their welcome, ha!!
Winter’s beauty! These almost look like ice caves.
Thank you, Belinda. In weather this cold, our waterfall freezes over completely with only pockets of openings where we see the water flowing beneath.
Fabulous icicles Eliza, your winter wonderland is so beautiful! 💛
Thank you, Xenia! The ice is pretty amazing these days. 🙂
Icicles like fingers! They’re quite amazing.
Thank you, Andrea. The temps have been quite bracing! 🙂
Wow! They ARE great. Brave of you to go out and get some photos in that kind of cold. 🙂
Thank you, Robin. Luckily, the waterfall is just steps from my door, so respite is close by. 🙂
Wow! How intense and beautiful.
Thank you, Cindy! How was your ski trip?
Brrrrr that is very cold. Stay warm Eliza
Thank you, Karina. The wood stove burns on. 🙂
Beautiful photos, Eliza! Brrrrr!
Thank you, Tina. It got up to a balmy 30º today, woo-hoo! 🙂
Wow, that’s cold! I had a walk down to the river today and it was frozen over–just 1/4 inch or so–thin, but all the way across. That’s unusual. But we have had overnight temps in the teens and twenties (it was about 35 today), so it makes sense. Beautiful ice photos.
Thank you, Lisa. That is unusually chilly for your area. I guess half the nation is feeling rather wintery by the sounds of it.
I’m feeling cold just looking at all the beautiful ice!! Hope you’re staying warm on your treks to the waterfall and love how that last photo looks like an ice cave.
Thank you, S! The waterfall is a jumble of broken boulders and the ‘ice cave’ was under one of them. It has been so cold, everything is frozen.
The photos are gorgeous and provide much food for the imagination: the icicles in first one look like a gemstone or a geode, in the second one, I see a sculpture of a person on the left side entering a dark cave… which is depicted in the third image. I wonder if he’s looking for the gemstone in the first image? You created a story in your photos of the icicles: simply lovely!
Thank you, much appreciated!
Lovely shots Eliza, I can’t imagine what -21c would feel like, nor do I think I would want to find out. Stay safe, warm and cosy.
Thanks, Karen. I pretty much stay inside when it gets that cold. The wood stove is pretty busy!
Phenomenal shots Eliza. Everything is frozen or frosty. We had snow a few weeks ago, but I’m really glad there are no icicles outside right now.
Thank you, Nailah! I heard that winter visited you… hope the weather has improved since then. 🙂
Hahaha. Yes, the snow’s long gone. Still cold, and lately dense fog that lasts all day. Mother nature is hilarious!
We’ve not cropped below zero yet, according to the thermometer in my car, but did achieve that one day last week. Our current temperatures seem balmy by comparison. One of my friends in Northern VT has posted his thermometer a few times on FB and the lows ranged between 20-30 degrees below. That makes my 5 degrees seem like shorts and flip flops weather. 🙂
You are lucky to have so many opportunities to see figured ice on your brook as your nice images display. I bet Chapel Falls looks impressive.
I bet Chapel is awesome, but I probably won’t be venturing out that way. I went last year and the paths were pretty icy.
The temp today was pretty nice, I was able to get a good walk in the sun. Glad for the lengthening days!
Not that I am encouraging you to endanger yourself but microspikes are great aids. That said, someone who was wearing them still slipped on the ice near a waterfall and was pulled under the ice and drowned. Nothing is foolproof and one should always use caution is such situations.
Goodness! Was this at Chapel? Precisely why I am nervous about going close to waterways when conditions are icy.
It was at Purgatory Falls in NH. The hiker was Dorie Goodman, an organic baker whom I had just met two weeks earlier at the winter farmer’s market in Amherst. I do go to waterfalls in winter but am very aware that anything can happen so use caution with every step.
I did something risky at Chapel a number of years ago. Although I had a friend with me he was on the upper side of the road above the waterfall. I was below and went out on the ice to get a shot. The water is not deep there but the current is strong and after I got back on the ground I realized what would have happened had the ice let go under me. Lesson learned and thankfully not the hard way. Stay safe and if at all in doubt don’t do it. 🙂
Always, safety first.
Glacial! I’m chilled to the bone. 🙂 Beautiful pictures — I hope your fingers didn’t get frozen!
Ha, yes, it has been pretty cold of late! I have wonderful fur mittens with an outer wool cover that keep my hands warm. 🙂
Thanks, Barbara!
Amazing photos Eliza. Bet you’re looking forward to Spring though! MJ
Thank you, MJ. Indeed I am, but winter, as cold as it is, is quite beautiful here. Today was sunny and the sun glittered off the snow in such a lovely way. 🙂
Brrr, is right, Eliza. I’ve been thinking of my NE friends in this deep freeze. On the bright side, a great opportunity for cool ice photos! ❄️❄️❄️
Thank you, Jane. It has been pretty cold this week, although every few days the temps break freezing to confuse us. Mid-30s feels almost balmy! 😀
Beautiful shots!
Thank you, Alys… enjoy your CA sunshine for me!
Thank you!
Hope you are staying warm Eliza! We have only had temperatures like that a couple of times since I have lived in Germany (28 winters now) and I feel for you! Lovely photos. 😃
Thank you, Cathy. Today and yesterday we broke freezing by a few degrees, but tonight it is back to super cold temps again. Time to load more wood in the stove!
