Pretty! I have resisted picking Cleome all summer (those prickles and funny scent….) but with very cool temperatures overnight I may have to rescue the last few. 😃

Ever-plentiful Zinnias and gorgeous Cleomes. Do you save their seeds?

    • Eliza Waters says:

The cleomes self-sow and pop up on their own every spring. I just thin them or transplant to where I want them. I usually buy zinnia seed, but this year I’m going to try saving my own seed to see what comes from the pollinator crosses.

  14. A winning combination!

    Love those cleome whiskers!

  16. Debbie says:

I can’t make myself pick my zinnias! But this is one gorgeous combination. Will picking them lengthen their lifespan, or should I simply let them go to seed for the critters??

    • Eliza Waters says:

Thank you, Debbie. Once an annual produces enough seed, it begins to shut down, so to keep the blooms coming, it is best to cut the flowers. I only leave some to go to seed at the end of the season for the birds.

    They go great together!

Cleome is a charmer with those zinnias. I don’t see people use cleome in a vase often but it is lovely.

  20. Kris P says:

It’s a lovely – and very summery – composition, Eliza. I lost out on Cleome again this year despite sowing seeds. With the exception of Daucus carota, all the seeds I sowed outside my cutting garden failed to germinate, presumably due to our very dry conditions.
