With the abundance of flowers available in my garden right now, it is hard to stop at creating just one vase, so today, I’ll showcase three. All too soon, my gardens will be knocked down by frost, so I’m relishing them while the parade of blooms lasts.
The first features pink Phlox (P. paniculata), Zinnias (Z. elegans ‘Cactus’ and ‘Swirls’) and pink and white Spider Flowers (Cleome hassleriana). A few stems of purple Mealycup Sage (Salvia farinacea) and white Flowering Tobacco (Nicotiana alata) complete it.
Moving on to yellow and orange, this vase features two different sunflowers (Helianthus annuus ‘Ivory Queen’ and a birdseed volunteer), yellow and orange Cosmos (C. sulphureus), orange Zinnia ‘Cactus’ and purple Angelonia angustifolia for accent.
Lastly, a small antique crackle vase filled with Cosmos sulphureus. I find their sunny faces so cheering.

They are all 3 so happy & pretty. ‘Volunteers’ are surprising & interesting. Angelonia is such a pretty flower, have been buying/using them in pots for several years, one is pink, just keeps growing.

All three arrangements, and the three containers, are so beautiful! I’ve not had much luck with Cosmos but seeing these – I may try again.
Thank you, Chris! I find these sturdier than the pink, and look great in a group (mine are with white cleome, next year, I’ll add blue bachelor buttons). However, the flowers must be picked just opened, as they go over fast.
What an amazing supply of flowers you have Eliza and they all look so fresh. You must be getting lots of rain there and I’m sure the cooler temps of New England help too. Your vases are beautiful and it’s hard to decide which I like best, but I must go with the pinks, purples, and blues. My favorite colors in the garden. Happy Labor Day Weekend!

We end up getting rain from the midwest, as well as the south, so most summers we manage to get enough. Drought is stressful when it happens!

It is a good plan.
At first I thought, oh that pink and blue one! Then I saw the helianthus, then the cosmos! I’d like all of them in my house. My flowers are getting seedy from the heat and dryness. It’s hard to find a nice full bouquet’s worth. I may rip them out to make space for fall crops. But first I’ll see if I can get a vase or two.

Beautiful! I was out working this morning doing some of those things on my fall chore list. I looked around and thought except for my hanging baskets, there’s not much left blooming except phlox and Knockout roses. You have a much better selection. 🙂

I’m glad that I’m not the only one to go a little crazy with floral arrangements this week (although I suppose it could be argued that I’ve been crazy for some time). All your creations are lovely but I adore that second vase. It had me smiling the moment I saw it. I’ve got to find more room for sunflowers next year and perhaps stagger my seed sowing – mine seem to be blooming at the same time this year. I’m also wondering why I never see the yellow and orange Cosmos for sale in nurseries here, while the pastels are plentiful. I’ll have to hunt down some seeds.

I ended up with 3 plantings of sunflowers, one by nature (volunteers) and 2 by me. The black oil volunteers are smaller, but perfect for cutting. I will send you some Cosmos seeds, I have tons. Can I mix them or would you prefer separate orange and yellow?

Thank you, Cathy. My Nicotiana close up from about 10 to 4, but will stay open inside the house. Planting them in part shade might help, but at the expense of number of blooms as they love sun. The new hybrids I’ve noticed stay open all day, but have no scent. That must have been a feat for the breeder!

Did you feature Cosmos sulphureus earlier? I saw it somewhere, for the first time in many years. It is a flower that could be more common (here) than it is now. You got some real nice ones again. I think I like the last one best, but I should not pick a favorite.
