The Fourth of July is Independence Day here in the USA and I’ve made a red, white and blue floral arrangement in honor of the day in my blue speckled ‘MILK’ jug vase.
Red Poppies (Papaver somniferum), which always bloom in time for the holiday, are the stars here, along with red Astilbe x arendsii. White Hosta (H. ‘Francis Williams’ ) blossoms and wild Malva moshata are sweetly scented additions. Blue Globe Onion (Allium caeruleum) and purple Catmint (Nepeta racemosa) are currently the only blue tinted flowers in my garden. A collar of blue Hosta leaves finish the arrangement.
For those observing the day, I wish you a safe and happy Fourth of July holiday weekend.

Thank you, Amy. The hosta flowers are packed this year. I didn’t sear the poppy ends as they don’t seem to last more than a day or two anyway. It’s day 2 and they are still intact. I think of them like iris, not going to last long.

Happy Independence Day Eliza! What a beautiful vase. Your red Astilbe is very striking an dthe blue allium lovely too. I thought if you today as my first Nicotiana plant started flowering! They are amazing, growing from such tiny weeny seedlings with hardly any watering in between, but like most of my plants they are quite short so far due to the drought. I first saw them in your summer garden and look forward to seeing some pictures of it again soon! 🙂
Thank you, Cathy! Isn’t it amazing how big and quickly Nicotiana grows from a tiny seed? Your nicotiana will now self-sow forever, lol! Mine are generally white, although some pink blushes show up on some and grow 2-3′ tall. The shorter hybrids revert back quite quickly. Mine just started blooming a few days ago. Their scent at dusk is like honey.
