Memorial Day

floral arrangementSince today is Memorial Day here in the U.S., I thought I would do a red, white and blue arrangement to commemorate the day. The last Monday in May is set aside to honor those who died in military service, with people placing flowers on the graves of the fallen, attending parades and speeches as part of the ceremony.

I used red Azalea blooms (no ID) that were planted here when we bought the house nearly 30 years ago, blue Jacob’s Ladder (Polemonium caeruleum) and white Bleeding Heart (Lamprocapnos spectabilis ‘Alba’) and two types of white Narcissi (N. ‘Cheerfulness’ and ‘Pueblo’).

I’m linking to Cathy at Rambling in the Garden‘s meme, In A Vase On Monday. Click the link to see what other gardeners the world over have arranged this week.

A beautifully patriotic arrangement: relaxed and peaceful; a pleasure to look at.

  2. Really well thought through and meaningful for your Memorial Day.

  3. Looks like a basket of flowers, with the bleeding heart forming the handle. Perfect for the day.

Just perfect for Memorial Day! I have a little Alba bleeding hearts plant with not enough flowers for an arrangement, but if it gets any bigger …

  5. Alice Pratt says:

Eliza, you have such an artistic touch for which flowers and vases go together! Stunning. I ❤️ The etched ferns. Peaceful day to all.

  6. I love how you displayed the bleeding hearts in your first photo. Beautiful creativity for today’s holiday, Eliza!

Another wonderful arrangement for this special day. Thanks, Eliza!

  11. Oh, gosh! You outdid yourself. Elegant as well as patriotic.

  12. Kris P says:

Beautifully done, Eliza! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a red-flowered azelea (but then these days we don’t see a lot of azaleas locally). Have a great holiday.

    • Eliza Waters says:

Thank you, Kris. Red isn’t a common color of azalea around here either. Most are the lurid PJM azaleas that bloom along with the forsythia in April. Not much goes with fire engine red in the garden so it often clashes with its neighbors, but the bloom period is short. Makes a longlasting cut flower, however.

  13. Love it – can’t believe how late your Azaleas and Daffs are. Those look like Mother’s Day Azaleas to me. Beautiful.

A beautiful arrangement Eliza. Those colours are just right. 🙂

  18. Joanna says:

Just beautiful and clever to use red white and blue today! I wish I’d thought of that, but then I’m not sure I’ve got any whites in the gardens just now. 😉

  19. Cathy says:

Ah, here in the UK it is just the late spring Bank Holiday. Your red, white and blue arrangement is so appropriate for the US Memorial Day and what an interesting combination you have put together. The white lamprocapnos is so pretty, and the etched vase is intriguing

  20. Amazing Memorial Day bouquets ! I hope your weekend was a good one, and that your new week is amazing ❤

    How gorgeous!

  22. Sp pretty Eliza and patriotic. It’s not always easy to make a red, white, and blue bouquet, but yours is stunning.
I hope you had a lovely weekend and with this hot and humid weather here in Ohio, it feels more like the 4th of July. Hope it’s cooler in New England.

  23. naturebackin says:

It makes for an interesting combination of flowers and colours perhaps not often used together.

Stunning arrangement, Eliza! Out of curiosity how long did it take you to arrange these flowers? You have such a great eye! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

    • Eliza Waters says:

Thank you so much, Amy. For this arrangement, I actually put it together as I harvested, then plonked it in a vase, all in the space of a few minutes. The most time was spent walking through the yard. 😉

  28. Robin says:

I think you outdo yourself with every arrangement, Eliza. This is so beautiful. (As usual, I need new words! I think I must write that every time.)
