March Snow

8" fresh snow

8″ fresh snow

Eight inches (20 cm) total fell from yesterday’s snowstorm. We feel fortunate as many received much more – two feet just a short drive away. And thankfully, the wind wasn’t as bad as they forecasted. Why do I listen to the hype? Meteorologist’s love drama and we can’t help but fall under their spell. ‘Better to be safe, than sorry’ and all that.

My spouse did all the clean up, bless him! It is beautiful to see all the tree branches lined in white and evergreens laden with soft mounds of snow. The azalea resembles ready-to-pick cotton.

It is already melting with temperatures in the mid-30s (2C). The good news with March storms is that the snow melts fairly quickly. One can enjoy it while it lasts without the burden of a long wait until spring.

  1. They do look like cotton! I hope your spring garden bursts forth with lots of blooms from the water as the snow melts and spring takes a hold for real!

  2. dorannrule says:

I am so glad you weathered the storm! 8 inches in southeast Virginia is a LOT. But as you say…March storms melt quickly. So Hang on. Spring is en route.

  3. Aishwarya says:

Oh Edinburgh had lots of snow too last week and it was absolutely amazing! And lie you rightly said, it melted away soon enough too 🙂

  4. pastpeter says:

There is a beauty when limbs are coated with fresh snow! Especially when it melts quickly!

  5. Jewels says:

So beautiful! March snow is the best! 🙂

  6. Murtagh's Meadow says:

Snow, snow, everywhere! Even here in Ireland March will be remembered for snow this year!

  7. Lovely scenes but like me you must be thinking enough is enough😏

  8. Laurie Graves says:

The snow does look like cotton. We got about a foot, not too heavy, and no wind. That meant no power outage. Yay!

  9. Widdershins says:

One last hurrah before it’s truly Spring … as far as we know. 🙂

  10. Val Boyko says:

It was so beautiful this morning … hard to leave for yoga, but no excuse as Don cleared the drive before bedtime last night.
Enjoy the last few days of snow … before the next round 😉

  11. susurrus says:

It’s hard to say whether the weather forecasters should be super cautious or not. They often assure us in the UK it would be VERY foolhardy to venture out when the weather is not really so bad. Several years ago, one of our weathermen got roundly criticised for saying a storm would not be too bad when it turned out to be very destructive and he never lived it down. The others don’t want to be tarred with the same brush.

  12. Elizabeth says:

I always wish I had been a meteorologist – if you get it wrong, well, better luck tomorrow.

  13. Joanna says:

I was wondering of you got some snow! We are getting it today, but like you we are just missing the worst of it. Beautiful pictures, though! I am enjoying the contrast of the near blizzard conditions outside and my seedlings on the windowsill! 🙂

  14. The weather forecasts have become a combination of drama and entertainment. There are two locals stations down here in SC. One is called First Warning and the other is First Alert. They go so far as to list the items of clothing you should put on before you leave the house. I’m not a big phone app person, but when it comes to weather that may be the easiest to live with – just the basics. Glad you didn’t get hammered.

  15. Archita says:

Spring will come soon, Eliza. Take care in this weather ☺️

  16. Kris P says:

You should here the coverage here when a real rainstorm is expected – you’d think we were facing a monsoon! Dare we hope that that was your last snowstorm?

    • Eliza Waters says:

Doubtful this will be the last of it. We can get snow into April, but each day is longer and warmer, so soon enough the yard will be snow-free.
      Aren’t those weather folk amazing?

  17. Vicki says:

How pretty it looks covered in snow too. I’ll bet there are many over your side of the world that are REALLY looking toward Spring’s fresh shoots (with the extra snowstorms you’ve had) this year.

  18. Rebecca says:

Beautiful snow! I guess the snow is over for us, but we are getting lots of rain. We have lakes in place where they ought not be. 🙂

  19. I love snow, but probably because it is over so quickly here. The disadvantage of its rarity is that we are surprised when it does falls and can’t cope with it on a day to day basis. Enjoy yours and look forward to spring!

  20. Spring?? Wow!! ☃☃☃🌻

  21. NorCal Zen says:

Wow! That’s a lot of snow!

    • Eliza Waters says:

Not as bad as a half hour west of us that got 31″ – so glad that passed us by. 🙂

      • NorCal Zen says:

That’s crazy! We have a lot of snow in the mountains around us. We’ll probably make another day trip this weekend to enjoy the snow, but here in the valley it’s been in the 60’s today.

      • Eliza Waters says:

Now that is nice weather! We’ll have to wait a while before we see those temps! 😉

      • NorCal Zen says:

It changes a lot here this time of the year. It was freezing Monday, and it’s supposed to rain for a week now. However, spring weather can easily change the other direction as well. 75 degrees would not be unusual. A month from now we could have 90-95 degrees..Under 85 suits me 🙂

  22. NorCal Zen says:

    Beautiful photos 🙂

  23. tippysmom2 says:

It is beautiful. Glad you didn’t get the brunt of the storm.

  24. Rebecca says:

I spent a couple of years living in England, where March is a savage, blustery, cold, grey month that feels like neither winter nor spring. Perhaps, living in a more severe climate than the UK as you do, Eliza, you have the bonus of the kind of weather you’ve shown us in today’s post? 🙂

    • Eliza Waters says:

It seems like a tease back and forth between winter and spring. I’m just happy to have the days above freezing as the snow slowly melts away. Mild is good!

  25. I agree it does look like cotton! Great picture. Where I live we get excited over 2 inches haha. Two feet may be a different story. Spring is not far! 🌸

  26. ladyfi says:

Snow brings about its own special peace… Lovely shots.

  27. Denzil says:

Beautiful as long as you don’t have to travel. Hope the spring comes soon for you Eliza

  28. Chloris says:

When I was a child in the North of England we had snow every winter, no fancy names, just snow. Schools never shut, it was business as usual. This year we had 5 days of snow but it was called a Polar Vortex and Beast ftom the East. There were dramatic headlines in the newspapers.
Trains were cancelled, schools were shut, everything ground to a halt.
I hope your snow goes soon, it’s time for spring.

    • Adele Brand says:

I’m from the south of England but totally agree! We do get snow every year in the Surrey Hills and temperatures well below zero aren’t rare either, but one flake over in London, and the media thinks the world is ending. It’s quite embarrassing really…

    • Eliza Waters says:

I think they are trying to distract us from all the other bad news. 😦
The loss of productivity must be such an economic hit. I remember one of my first bosses telling me I just had to leave the house earlier so that I’d be on time. 🙂 Nobody cancelled business for the day!

  29. Not a terrible storm as predicted. We measured 15 inches here but it was a light snow, not too bad for all the shoveling that was needed. And, you are right, this time of year the temperature goes up and down and we’ll see a change in the landscape almost overnight!

  30. Christina says:

It makes our meagre amount seen rather silly!

    • Eliza Waters says:

It’s all what one is used to, I guess. The snow totals across New England varied greatly in this storm… an hour away they got 36″ :O Makes one happy to get 8″!

  31. Peter Herpst says:

March has certainly roared in like a lion in your neck of the woods. Hope it goes out like a lamb. The snow is gorgeous in YOUR garden.

  32. Beautiful – even though I am ready to see some spring flowers!

  33. Beautiful photos and I love the shot of the cottony snow on azalea! I hope it melts quickly so when can see the first bloom of the year soon!

  34. It’s so beautiful.

  35. Brian Skeys says:

Each of the seasons have their beauty, winter is a bit tougher to cope with.

  36. Adele Brand says:

It is beautiful. I love the silence of snow, and the sense that the trees are sleeping.

  37. Robin says:

Your snow is beautiful. I like spring snows. They refresh the landscape, and usually don’t outwear their welcome. 🙂
I know what you mean about the weatherfolks and their hype. I think naming winter storms fits in with going a little over the top. It is too reminiscent of hurricanes, for me.

  38. Maria says:

    It still looks lovely!

  39. Jet Eliot says:

Thanks for this glimpse into your winter garden, Eliza, it is beautiful too.

  40. That snow is incredible! I have never experienced snow and would love to. The melt must be problematic though. Love the pics!

  41. I think you all in the Northeast have gotten more snow than us in Colorado this year. Here in the southwest the snowpack is only at 50% of what we need. They say March is the snowiest month so we are all hoping and waiting.

    • Eliza Waters says:

It has been snowing endlessly here! Further east along the coast they are even worse off. Three nor’easters in less than two weeks is crazy. Some folks are still without power from previous storms. When I look out right now at the big flakes and near whiteout conditions, I must say it is beautiful!
