8″ fresh snow
Eight inches (20 cm) total fell from yesterday’s snowstorm. We feel fortunate as many received much more – two feet just a short drive away. And thankfully, the wind wasn’t as bad as they forecasted. Why do I listen to the hype? Meteorologist’s love drama and we can’t help but fall under their spell. ‘Better to be safe, than sorry’ and all that.
My spouse did all the clean up, bless him! It is beautiful to see all the tree branches lined in white and evergreens laden with soft mounds of snow. The azalea resembles ready-to-pick cotton.
It is already melting with temperatures in the mid-30s (2C). The good news with March storms is that the snow melts fairly quickly. One can enjoy it while it lasts without the burden of a long wait until spring.

They do look like cotton! I hope your spring garden bursts forth with lots of blooms from the water as the snow melts and spring takes a hold for real!

The snow does look like cotton. We got about a foot, not too heavy, and no wind. That meant no power outage. Yay!

It’s hard to say whether the weather forecasters should be super cautious or not. They often assure us in the UK it would be VERY foolhardy to venture out when the weather is not really so bad. Several years ago, one of our weathermen got roundly criticised for saying a storm would not be too bad when it turned out to be very destructive and he never lived it down. The others don’t want to be tarred with the same brush.
A fair warning is good, but it’s the hyped up drama that I mind. I swear it’s to boost ratings! 😉
I always wish I had been a meteorologist – if you get it wrong, well, better luck tomorrow.

The weather forecasts have become a combination of drama and entertainment. There are two locals stations down here in SC. One is called First Warning and the other is First Alert. They go so far as to list the items of clothing you should put on before you leave the house. I’m not a big phone app person, but when it comes to weather that may be the easiest to live with – just the basics. Glad you didn’t get hammered.
Yes, we got off easy compared to others, esp. along the coast.

Doubtful this will be the last of it. We can get snow into April, but each day is longer and warmer, so soon enough the yard will be snow-free.

I love snow, but probably because it is over so quickly here. The disadvantage of its rarity is that we are surprised when it does falls and can’t cope with it on a day to day basis. Enjoy yours and look forward to spring!

That’s crazy! We have a lot of snow in the mountains around us. We’ll probably make another day trip this weekend to enjoy the snow, but here in the valley it’s been in the 60’s today.
Now that is nice weather! We’ll have to wait a while before we see those temps! 😉
It changes a lot here this time of the year. It was freezing Monday, and it’s supposed to rain for a week now. However, spring weather can easily change the other direction as well. 75 degrees would not be unusual. A month from now we could have 90-95 degrees..Under 85 suits me 🙂

I spent a couple of years living in England, where March is a savage, blustery, cold, grey month that feels like neither winter nor spring. Perhaps, living in a more severe climate than the UK as you do, Eliza, you have the bonus of the kind of weather you’ve shown us in today’s post? 🙂
It seems like a tease back and forth between winter and spring. I’m just happy to have the days above freezing as the snow slowly melts away. Mild is good!

When I was a child in the North of England we had snow every winter, no fancy names, just snow. Schools never shut, it was business as usual. This year we had 5 days of snow but it was called a Polar Vortex and Beast ftom the East. There were dramatic headlines in the newspapers.
Trains were cancelled, schools were shut, everything ground to a halt.
I hope your snow goes soon, it’s time for spring.
I’m from the south of England but totally agree! We do get snow every year in the Surrey Hills and temperatures well below zero aren’t rare either, but one flake over in London, and the media thinks the world is ending. It’s quite embarrassing really…

The loss of productivity must be such an economic hit. I remember one of my first bosses telling me I just had to leave the house earlier so that I’d be on time. 🙂 Nobody cancelled business for the day!
Not a terrible storm as predicted. We measured 15 inches here but it was a light snow, not too bad for all the shoveling that was needed. And, you are right, this time of year the temperature goes up and down and we’ll see a change in the landscape almost overnight!

It’s all what one is used to, I guess. The snow totals across New England varied greatly in this storm… an hour away they got 36″ :O Makes one happy to get 8″!

Thank you, Caroline. It can get muddy in spring, but if it thaws gradually, it is better than too warm when flooding occurs.
I think you all in the Northeast have gotten more snow than us in Colorado this year. Here in the southwest the snowpack is only at 50% of what we need. They say March is the snowiest month so we are all hoping and waiting.
It has been snowing endlessly here! Further east along the coast they are even worse off. Three nor’easters in less than two weeks is crazy. Some folks are still without power from previous storms. When I look out right now at the big flakes and near whiteout conditions, I must say it is beautiful!
