In A Vase On Monday – Autumn Light

Even though it feels summery with warm rain and humidity from Tropical Storm Nate, the light and changing leaves are definitely autumnal.

For today’s arrangement, I’m featuring colors to match the season– gold Zinnias (Zinnia elegans ‘Sprite’), orange Cigar Plant (Cuphea ignea) and burgundy Dahlia ‘Voodoo’ with purple Salvia ‘Magic Wand’ used for contrast.

The heavy glass Art Deco style tripod vase is accented with Red Maple (Acer rubrum) and Barrenwort (Epimedium × versicolor) leaves. Grasses are Japanese Forest Grass (Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola’) and Maiden Grass (Miscanthus sinensis ‘Gracillimis’).

Thanks to Cathy at Rambling In the Garden, who hosts a weekly meme to showcase arrangements created from our gardens. Wander over to see what gardeners all over the world are arranging this week.

A really beautiful arrangement you’ve created here, Eliza. Nice photo too.
It’s also starting to feel like autumn here. Although yesterday & Friday were in the high 90’s 😦 the light is getting that lovely feel.

  2. Love the introduction of all of those fall colors … nice images

  3. Rich autumn colors – you’re working your magic Eliza with those wands and voodoo :). Love the tones of orange in the zinnias.

  4. Christina says:

Beautiful, Eliza. You’ve really captured the colours of the season. I noticed your lovely vase from the very first image, it’s very striking.

  5. jenanita01 says:

Those lovely dark dahlias keep on coming, don’t they?

  6. AmyRose🌹 says:

My “eye” can see how carefully you arranged these flowers, Eliza. Just beautiful. 🍁

  7. Lovely fall arrangement, but that vase is another winner. You clearly have the very best collection of gorgeous vases. I look forward to your post each Monday. 🙂

Thank you very much, Judy. I do have a weakness for a nice vase…I have a hutch full of them-lol! I have to say ‘no’ to many that I see for sale. They have to be extra-special to justify buying any more.

  8. Alice Pratt says:

Super beautiful! Need to invent more adjectives for your gorgeous bouquets! The purple ‘Magic Wand’ really compliments the other colors. The Cuphea is so pretty, I’ve noticed Honey Bees on mine……and have several shoots in water, on a sunny sill… hoping they will root.

  9. pbmgarden says:

Fabulous seasonal blend and the vase itself is striking as well. Hope your week is fun Eliza.

  10. The effect is beautifully dramatic Eliza.

  11. Sally says:

Hi Eliza, That’s a beautiful arrangement. The grasses and Maple leaves really do add so much and the vase is stunning. I’ve never seen anything like it.

  12. What an absolutely gorgeous vase you have created this week! That bit of purple and the Hakonechloa grass make it sing. It says fall but in such an uplifting way. Your comment section won’t accept my blog address only my FB address. So here is a link to my vase today: http://www.lindabrazill.com/each_little_world/2017/10/toad-lilies-bloom-at-last.html

What a pretty autumnal vase, Eliza – thanks for sharing

  21. Robin says:

I’ve run out of words for arrangements, Eliza. Beautiful, stunning, breathtaking, lovely, wonderful, and filled with autumn’s magic, all come to mind but I’ve probably used them before. I need some new words. 🙂

  22. Dymoon says:

    loving the fall colours…

  23. Kris P says:

Both the vase contents and the surrounding landscape do look distinctively autumnal, Eliza. Here, it’s just the cooler night temperatures and changing light values that mark the seasonal shift.

    • Eliza Waters says:

Thank you, Kris. Nate is dumping buckets today with rain and wind bringing down the leaves. I do love to watch the leaves in a gust fluttering to the ground, even though it is denuding the trees. Going to have to get used to skeleton trees again. I really miss the leaves and the fresh air they create.

  24. Annette says:

A beautiful bouquet, Eliza, so well balanced. The grasses add just the right amount of lightness, love the colour of the Dahlia, a true winner 🙂

  25. albert says:

Yes, it’s about the light. And looking closely. Your arrangement reminded me.

  26. AlisonC says:

A wonderful mix of colours giving an autumnal feel. The grasses give lovely movement.

  27. Laurie Graves says:

Lovely, lovely, especially that burgundy dahlia.

  28. Properly Autumnal and perfect colors for a celebration of the season. The vase is cool and probably heavy enough to support my thick tropicals. I envy the Forest Grass, love it and have never lived far enough north to grow it.

  29. Cathy says:

What beautiful autumn colours Eliza. It is a lovely idea to use foliage from the maple, and your fabulous dahlia is still going strong! 🙂

  30. So lovely. I really like the look of dahlia voodoo.
