I decided on a pink and green theme this week, using my late mother’s wine-colored, etched glass vase, presumably from the 1940s or 50s, with grapes and vines twirling around it in a decorative pattern.
I’ve used dark and light pink cosmos (C. bipinnatus ‘Sensation Mix’), pink zinnias (Z. elegans ‘County Fair Mix’), pink and white phlox (P. paniculata), 
and white spider flower (Cleome hassleriana).
Lime green bracts of Hydrangea arborescens ‘Annabelle,’ 
along with green foliage of lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) and zebra mallow (Malva sylvestris ‘Zebrina’) provide the greenery. For accent, I added panicles of fountain grass (Pennisetum alopecuroides).

This is a beautiful arrangement of flowers that looks spring-like in its bright, fresh colours. Cosmos flowers look really beautiful in the highveld areas of South Africa, largely in the theatre of the Anglo-Boer War for the seeds were brought in with the horse feed imported from Mexico. Swathes of these lovely colour fill vacant lands and bob along the verges of the road – as you can imagine, they are thus regarded as a pest by maize farmers in particular.
Thank you, Anne. Fields of cosmos must be lovely to behold. I expect the finches would love the seed. There is a lot of talk about invasive species these days. I’m reading an excellent book by Fred Pearce, a British environmental journalist, ‘The New Wild,’ which is throwing a different light on the subject. It turns out that the science behind ‘invasive biology’ is pretty weak, akin to a xenophobic Cold War on non-native species. I highly recommend it if you can get a hold of a copy.

This is a very special vase Eliza, you have mixed the shades of pink delightfully; I would never have thought of mixing hydrangeas with something delicate like Cosmos, just shows I should be more adventurous as you’ve succeeded in making it work perfectly.
Thank you, Christina. I find it challenging to find a hydrangea head that is small enough not to look too clunky in an arrangement. The delicate flowers hopefully help defray that weight.

This is just gorgeous Eliza. Very summery and lively, but not too girly thanks to the balancing act of the white phlox. I tried to spot the Cleome as I attempted but failed to grow some this year (I think we are just too cold) but I couldn’t see it. The fuzzy grass is fab!
Thank you, Joanna. The cleome is smaller secondary blossoms. They are best spotted in the last two photos. 11 o’clock on the left one and in the center of the last, to the left of the red cosmos. There is phlox also nearby, so that may have confused you. 🙂
Ah yes, there it is! I think I was looking for pink not white. It is terribly pretty — delicate.
It’s a good, long lasting flower in the garden. Mine always self sow, so I simply arrange seedings in the spring.

No, but I was thinking about it the other day. I have used it, but for a little tight mound of flowers that looks as though they’re in the bowl. Your idea would make it easier to use taller flowers (though still short) and I’ve been thinking about what I have available to try…
