In A Vase On Monday – Pink and Green

IMG_4489IMG_4490I decided on a pink and green theme this week, using my late mother’s wine-colored, etched glass vase, presumably from the 1940s or 50s, with grapes and vines twirling around it in a decorative pattern.

IMG_4495I’ve used dark and light pink cosmos (C. bipinnatus ‘Sensation Mix’), pink zinnias (Z. elegans ‘County Fair Mix’), pink and white phlox (P. paniculata),  IMG_4491and white spider flower (Cleome hassleriana).

Lime green bracts of Hydrangea arborescens ‘Annabelle,’ IMG_4494along with green foliage of lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) and zebra mallow (Malva sylvestris ‘Zebrina’) provide the greenery. For accent, I added panicles of fountain grass (Pennisetum alopecuroides).

This is a beautiful arrangement of flowers that looks spring-like in its bright, fresh colours. Cosmos flowers look really beautiful in the highveld areas of South Africa, largely in the theatre of the Anglo-Boer War for the seeds were brought in with the horse feed imported from Mexico. Swathes of these lovely colour fill vacant lands and bob along the verges of the road – as you can imagine, they are thus regarded as a pest by maize farmers in particular.

Thank you, Anne. Fields of cosmos must be lovely to behold. I expect the finches would love the seed. There is a lot of talk about invasive species these days. I’m reading an excellent book by Fred Pearce, a British environmental journalist, ‘The New Wild,’ which is throwing a different light on the subject. It turns out that the science behind ‘invasive biology’ is pretty weak, akin to a xenophobic Cold War on non-native species. I highly recommend it if you can get a hold of a copy.

    So very pretty!

  3. Christina says:

This is a very special vase Eliza, you have mixed the shades of pink delightfully; I would never have thought of mixing hydrangeas with something delicate like Cosmos, just shows I should be more adventurous as you’ve succeeded in making it work perfectly.

This is just amazing arrangement! The little dash of white glorifies the pink and green better! It’s one of the first posts I’m reading today and I am filled with happiness at the sight of these beautiful flowers. Thank you so much 🙂

    Really beautiful Eliza.

It has only been recently—in the past few years—that I realized how lovely green and pink are together. Your floral arrangement illustrates this so beautifully. As always, great vase.

A lovely arrangement Eliza. I really like the shape of it as well as those pretty pinks. 🙂

  17. pbmgarden says:

What a pretty mix of late summer flowers and all the more special in that heritage vase. I think it can be useful to start out with at theme.

  18. Kris P says:

It’s a beautiful arrangement, Eliza! The fresh green foliage adds just the right touch. I so wish I had cosmos growing in my own garden this summer. I did plant some plugs in late spring but our first heatwave quickly dispatched them.

  19. This is just gorgeous Eliza. Very summery and lively, but not too girly thanks to the balancing act of the white phlox. I tried to spot the Cleome as I attempted but failed to grow some this year (I think we are just too cold) but I couldn’t see it. The fuzzy grass is fab!

  20. Beautywhizz says:

Lovely. The dark red cosmos caught my eye.

  21. Val Boyko says:

Such a well balanced beautiful arrangement Eliza! May it reflect how you are feeling 💛

  22. I truly love it!! I’m seeing a quilt in those colors. 🙂

  23. So pretty ! One of my favorite color combination 😊 The hydrangeas work so well with the cosmos. It must have such a sweet fragrance with the lemon balm, too . A quintessentially summer arrangement 😊

  24. Joanne says:

Oh my, what a happy display this is! Your talent of flower arranging astounds me, Eliza and this is one of my favourites. 🙂

  25. What a beautiful colour combination. I see that you’ve got some phlox in there, which I have grown for the first time this year and will definitely be expanding next year.

  26. Kathy Sturr says:

Another perfect match! And still loving those “bunny grasses.” Beautiful!

  27. Debra says:

  29. WOW! … what a beautiful arrangement! I love the porch railing backdrop in your first image too. Looks like the cover of Better Homes & Gardens or House Beautiful!

  30. Gorgeous, as always.

  31. Love it, Cosmos are an old favorite and I love the color combination in the vase – it reminds me of something my mother or grandmother might have had.

  32. Such a neat arrangement Eliza with lovely colour mix.

  33. arlingwoman says:

This is a beautiful vase. I am learning from your Monday blogs!!!

    • Eliza Waters says:

🙂 Thanks, Lisa. Have you tried arranging your plate yet?

      • arlingwoman says:

No, but I was thinking about it the other day. I have used it, but for a little tight mound of flowers that looks as though they’re in the bowl. Your idea would make it easier to use taller flowers (though still short) and I’ve been thinking about what I have available to try…

  34. Dalo 2013 says:

A great arrangement of colors and variety Eliza, seemingly perfectly balanced and with the first photo of the white picket fence in the background…it feels like home.

  35. Jane Lurie says:

Your arrangement is spectacular, Eliza. The colors and textures are perfect.

  36. Maria F. says:

    Wow Eliza, very nice!

  37. bittster says:

Nice how you put the hydrangea to use as a filler, and the cosmos look so fresh and new. This time of year I love seeing the fresh and new as I’m going to be in autumn denial for the next few months 🙂

  38. Bun Karyudo says:

That’s a beautiful display! It looks gorgeous. 🙂

  39. MK says:

Another beautiful arrangement. I’d say how can you stand the pressure from week to week, but I know better!

    • Eliza Waters says:

Thank you, you know I love the creative process! I had a great time doing tomorrow’s post. I’m challenging myself to use a different vase every week. So much fun!
