In A Vase On Monday – Azure and Gold

IMG_3129AIMG_3127s highlighted in my last post, gold is predominant in my garden this week, so my vase features sundrops (Oenothera fruiticosa) and vertical spikes of Carolina lupine (Thermopsis caroliniana), along with contrasting azure globes of Allium azureum. IMG_3126

There are also gold stars of yellow loosestrife (Lysimachia punctata) and mini-suns of Eastern daisy fleabane (Erigeron annuus).

IMG_3130A few sprigs of catmint (Nepeta mussinii) and stems of common yarrow (Achillea millefolium) complete the arrangement.

IMG_3123The vase, a Brita Holmquist design, was handmade and painted in Italy and the table linen is vintage Jean Vier.

Thanks to Cathy at Rambling In the Garden, who hosts a weekly meme to showcase what is blooming in our gardens. Wander over to see what gardeners all over the world are arranging this week.

An other beauty!! Thanks for sharing your lovely arrangements Eliza 💝

  3. Cath says:

Very Beautiful and seems full of hope and Spring – although I guess you are really in Summer now! What an amazing blue those Alliums are.

  4. So beautiful and what a wonderful pitcher. 🙂

  5. Aishwarya says:

I love the burst of colours 🙂 it’s fresh and instantly uplifted my mood! Cheers

  6. Very beautiful colors! They look so lovely! The bunny vase is so cute and I love that name, “sundrop!” The yellow is so cheerful! Thank you for sharing!! 😀

  7. smallsunnygarden says:

The color combination has such a clean, fresh look, and the vase is delightful! Love the use of fleabane too 🙂

  8. Christina says:

A beautiful combination of contrasting colours in your gorgeous jug today, Eliza; The Allium is such a perfect blue, I’ve tried these and they just wouldn’t grow for me.

  9. Do you know the writer, Susan Hill? In ‘The Magic Apple Tree’ she calls spring the yellow season

  10. Cathy says:

This is lovely Eliza. A real midsummer vase. From seeing what you have growing in your garden I know I would love it there! It has also reminded me that my blue allium have not yet returned… The vase itself is pretty too. Have a good week!

    • Eliza Waters says:

Thank you so much, Cathy. Three have commented that these allium don’t return. I’ll have to see come next year. I noticed that there is very little foliage, so I wonder. Maybe I’ll let them self sow.

  11. Cathy says:

Your colour combination is my favourite, Eliza. Such a lovely vase – flowers & jug – complete with bunny. Like Christina, I’ve tried your gorgeous allium but it wouldn’t persist. The oenothera I’ve yet to establish, but I see it in villages around me. And it is such a joy, isn’t it?

  12. Ann @Ann Edwards Photography says:

    zesty and zingy!

  13. Kathy Sturr says:

Wonderful! I am going to look up Carolina Lupine … I saw something blooming on the side of the road coming back from the lake that looked like Lupine but I thought, it’s late for Lupine to be blooming but you have opened my eyes with this beautiful vase arrangement. I just love how you coordinate the vase and the linens to your arrangements.

    • Eliza Waters says:

Thank you, Kathy! I’ve loved thermopsis ever since I first laid eyes on it 25 years ago. I’ve always had a small patch of it, but this year, I’ve started to divide it and place it around the garden more.

  14. Laurie Graves says:

Best ever! And that is saying something because all your arrangements are so lovely. But this one! Holy guacamole!

  15. A very beautiful bouquet. (Suzanne0

  16. Oh Eliza be still my heart….azure and gold is a perfect summer combo and I adore that jug and the presentation!

  17. Blue and yellow are one of my favorite color combinations.

  18. Cathy says:

The co-ordination of blooms and jug and cloth is spot on – great combo, Eliza

  19. Gillian says:

Amazingly beautiful flowers Eliza. I’m with Kimberly… there’s something about blue and yellow that is so appealing.

  20. Gorgeous, Eliza! I really like how the Alliums work in this bouquet. If only they’d grow in containers…

    • Eliza Waters says:

Thank you! Alliums might grow in containers- being a bulb. I know someone who plants garlic in her containers to discourage munching deer.

      • Garlics and chives work for me, too. And tulips. But: Anyone from the Narcissus family, the Alliums azureum and sphaerocephalon plus Nectaroscordon siculum – a total dream plant for me – rot. Stubbornly! And I’ve tried for years. Even if I put them only on expanded clay instead of earth. Maybe I should try pure sand, or sandy gravel.

      • Eliza Waters says:

Yes, perhaps gravel might do it or against a sunny wall, under an eave that shields it from rain, if at all possible. 😉

  21. Such a refreshing colour combination.

  22. livblumer says:

    Very Provencal!

  23. Kris P says:

Lovely flowers in one of my very favorite color combinations! That jug makes a charming container too.

  24. Outstanding, I thought the Alliums were Agapanthus, said, Wow, how did she do that. I am also a fan of blue china would have bought the vase as well!!

  25. Heather says:

This is a gorgeous arrangement! Are most of those native wildflowers? We are experiencing an abundance of wildflower blossoms right now, and it makes me giddy 🙂 The daisies, cosmos, and vetch are out in force, and the sweet pea is just starting.

    • Eliza Waters says:

Thank you, Heather. 🙂 The fleabane, yarrow, sundrops and lupine are US natives; the loosestrife are from Eurasia, but have naturalized here. Allium azureum & catmint are not native, either.
Do you collect wildflowers for vases? As I child, I got my start with inspirations there!

      • Heather says:

I haven’t had anything in a vase in my house for years! Going on 16 in fact…the age of my cat. He may let me bring some inside now, but he (and likely his sister who passed in November) ate EVERY plant we ever brought in. But I used to collect plants from my mom’s garden for her vases, and I love seeing your arrangements.

      • Eliza Waters says:

Sorry to hear that about the lack of fresh flower arrangements and sister’s passing. I guess I’ve been fortunate that my cats have left mine alone. That would have been a tough one for me.

      • Heather says:

For the first time in 15 years I’ve been able to have some houseplants – so there’s a silver lining in there 😉 Still, that feline boy likes to eat fresh-cut!

  26. arlingwoman says:

Blue is the perfect balancer for the gold. And that vase is perfect as well.

  27. Lovely assortment beautifully photographed.

  28. Peyton says:

That is absolutely gorgeous arrangement and the vase really made it stand out. Very cheerful.

  29. ladyfi says:

    What a stunning arrangement.

  30. Hannah says:

Your blue and yellow rabbit jug is so cute, Eliza. And the Allium azureums are actually blue, they look good with all the golden yellows. All the varied shapes of flowers look great together, too.

  31. What a beautiful bouquet and you have found the perfect vase and tablecloth to go with it. Love the color combo!

  32. Anna says:

That combination of yellow and blue flowers is so fresh and uplifting Eliza and your vase is the perfect companion. I’ve made a note of that allium which looks a most intense shade of blue so thank you.

  33. You captured summer in one photo – beautiful. I LOVE the vase. 🙂

  34. Such a pretty vase – though I am sad to see the peonies go!

  35. MK says:

Haha, love your vase and how it goes so perfectly with the bouquet you created! Your vase collection compared to mine is like a fashion designer’s wardrobe versus the lonely little black dress! I have no little black dress, but I do have a big clunky glass vase (somewhere).

    • Eliza Waters says:

Hehe! And I have such a weakness for collecting them. I can’t help myself! I picked up another at the thrift shop the other day…it’ll be featured soon.

  36. MK says:

Oh, I get it now! That big building in your gardens … that must be where you keep all those vases!
