For this week’s vase, I’ve used warm-colored flowers from the garden that you can see off the deck in the background. The calendula and fleabane have been allowed to self sow into exhilarating abundance! Since we eat all meals outside this time of year, we really are enjoying it.
Other than orange and yellow calendula (C. officinalis), I’ve added sundrops (Oenothera tetragona), 
salvia (S. x sylvestris) and common daylily (Hemerocallis fulva).
Lady’s mantle (Alchemilla mollis) again features as filler and the accent grass is yellow foxtail (Setaria lutescens). The vase is a vintage ironstone pitcher from England that once belonged to my mother-in-law.

When you say ‘Ditch lily’ – do they grow wild with you?
Boy, do they ever! Most folks frown upon them as ‘common’ or ‘weeds’, but they are just fine by me! There are far worse plants and I find them quite manageable.

Oh, I love your cutting patch. I was thinking last weekend when I cut a bouquet that all the colors are warm now. I had to hunt around for some blues to cool it all down. Yours is lovely!

Thank you, Rebecca! Yes, plenty of calendula, they self sow like mad! Since I had no other plans for that space, I let them take over. We joined a CSA, so no longer use that space for veggies except for a few tomatoes, cukes and basil.

My – that’s a lot of calendula you have! You have most usefully used them in your vase today with perfect partners. Is your hemerocallis really as orange as that? My H fulva (which didn’t flower last year but is budding up nicely now) is more yellow than this so I am curious. All in all a warm and sunny vase – thanks for sharing it

And now that mine has flowered again, Eliza, I see it is far more orange than I remember, so not yellow at all!
Have they naturalized in your area? They are pretty widespread here in New England.

Gorgeous! I love your view of the garden, too. Calendula is one of my favorites. It has run rampant in my Potager but that’s okay. We eat (and basically) live on our back porch pretty much year round now that we have windows and a wood stove, ha ha. I love looking over the garden and hearing the birds.

Thank you! We LOVE our deck. We were out there for most of the afternoon (north facing so it is shaded) and for all 3 meals. We look at the garden, yard, wooded edge and sky and sigh with our collective blessings. Tomorrow is our 25th year here. 🙂
